Applications Drop at Top Liberal-Arts Colleges: 20% Decline at Williams

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Bloomberg reported a decline in applications to seven of eight highly-ranked liberal-arts colleges, led by a 20% drop at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, ranked third in the liberal-arts category by U.S. News and World Report, reported a 10% decline.  Fifth-ranked Middlebury College in Vermont experienced a 12% and at Amherst College in Massachusetts, applications fell by 1 percent.

Some counselors think the fall in applications may result in students have a better chance gaining admission to top liberal-arts schools.

Applications also declined at Carleton College in Minnesota, Maine’s Bowdoin College and Pomona College in Claremont, California.

According to Bloomberg, Wellesley College, in Massachusetts, reported a 2% increase in applications.

Applications to the class of 2013 also increased at at all eight Ivy League universities, MIT, Duke and Stanford.
