Fueling the admissions frenzy, Penn informed some regular decision non-athlete applicants of their almost certain admission this Spring. Athletes frequently receive “likely letters” from schools as part of the normal recruiting process.
Penn sent out approximately 200 likely letters in March 2010 – an increase from last year’s 120. According to the Daily Pennsylvanian, many of the students who received the letters expressed interest in studying natural sciences such as physics and chemistry, traditionally “under-enrolled” majors.
Some admissions experts have speculated that those receiving these letters may be more likely to enroll. Since admissions yield is a component of some college rankings, and many colleges have a passion for on enrolling their most desirable applicants, the likely letters may have tangible strategic value.
Applicants not receiving likely letters may experience additional admission anxiety as they await decisions.
