Harvard Admits 6.9%

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

A record-low 6.9% of applicants were accepted to the Harvard College Class of 2014.

Applications exceeded 30,000 for the first time ever, an increase of about 5% over last year.  According to published reports, while the acceptance rate dropped by 0.1% from last year, 64 more students were accepted.

The Harvard Crimson reported that more than 60% of the accepted students are eligible to receive need-based financial aid from Harvard, with the average award totaling $40,000.

Admitted students to the Class of 2014 are from 79 countries, and international students comprise 9% of the class.

“The growing reputation of Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences” is a factor attributed to the increase in applications.  More than 12% of the admitted students listed engineering as their intended concentration, up 2% from last year.

Harvard did not disclose the size of its wait list, which is thought to be substantial.
